The Feb. 2 column authored by Jennie Young is typical class envy. She starts out by telling us how terrible Mitt Romney and the CEO of Papa John’s Pizza are. She then proceeds to throw off on many professions that don’t meet her criteria of professions that “complete you.”Young goes on to tell us how the minimum wage rate is hurting our country. Could it be time for a small bump in the minimum wage? Maybe, but to go to the level President Obama wants $10.10 would be a raise of almost 40 percent. This would be disastrous to the very people she is claiming are being harmed. A very small fraction of workers in this country are paid the minimum wage. Delivering pizzas never was nor never will be a career job. Instead of telling our young people that they can’t get ahead because Mitt Romney is keeping them down, she needs to be telling them:1. Stay in school. The unemployment rate for college grads is half the rest of the group.2. Get married and stay married. Ninety-seven percent of two-income families are above the poverty rate.3. Don’t have children until you can afford them.4. You most likely will struggle. Most of us have.5. Spend less than you make. Over half of our country lives paycheck to paycheck. If you do not have a financial cushion, when life happens you will be in crisis.6. Don’t listen to naysayers. Negative people will drag you down. Our country is still the land of opportunity. Let’s quit telling people they are being held back when in fact most are not.DAVE WORTMANElizabethton
