I was amazed at the article on the front page of your paper on Jan. 24 showing a woman holding a can of Van Camp’s Pork and Beans in one hand and, supposedly, a worm or fly larva in the other claiming that she found the worms when she opened the can.It seems to me that such reckless reporting would be inviting a lawsuit for libel from the company. ConAgra is sure to see a big drop in sales of their products, especially the Pork and Beans shown on the front page.Furthermore, the reporter is just taking the woman’s word for it. For all he knew she could have put the worms in the can herself with the intention of filing her own lawsuit in hopes of reaping a big reward, (believe it or not people are known to have done that) and if she is successful I think she should split the take with Nathan Baker, your reporter who helped her make her case (if she is so inclined).Either way, as I see it the damage is already done, with a signed and sealed article and photos to back it up. The ConAgra company is bound to lose a lot of money from lack of sales of their products, unless they get a guilty verdict when and if they sue the Johnson City Press.LINCOLN HIGGINSJohnson City
