ELIZABETHTON — Minus a starter, Elizabethton didn’t give its head coach a reason to stay concerned. The Lady Cyclones played well in every phase of the game, and whipped Happy Valley 79-45 on Tuesday night at Bayless Gym.Ranked No. 2 in the state, Elizabethton improved to 6-0 in the Three Rivers Conference and 15-3 overall. Happy Valley fell to 2-4, 11-11.Lady Cyclones’ head coach Len Dugger said he was concerned because starting post Sarah Robinson wasn’t at the game because of an illness.“As a coach, I see all of the intangibles Sarah does to help this team,” said Dugger. “If you had told me before the game Emily (Schubert) and Kyra (McCrary) were going to step up like that, I would have felt better.”Elizabethton guards Kayla Marosites and Kelci Marosites dominated the game throughout. The twins combined for 42 points, 16 rebounds and nine steals — just missing a twin triple-double.Kayla had 23 points, nine rebounds and five steals, and looked smooth all over the court.“I always just try to have fun,” said Kayla. “I usually do better that way.”The sophomore said the players haven’t been affected by the high state ranking.“We don’t worry about those things,” said Kayla. “I think we just try to do our best in everything.”After a bit of a sluggish start, the Lady Cyclones pushed ahead 19-10 late in the first quarter. Happy Valley got within seven in the second quarter, but Elizabethton carried a 40-28 lead into the locker room. Then the Lady Cyclones opened the second half with a 17-7 spurt to put the game away. Defense keyed the second-half runaway.“A big part of our game plan is the intensity we play defense with,” said Dugger. “The kids are working extremely hard on the defensive end of the floor.”Elizabethton really hurt the Lady Warriors from 3-point land, connecting eight times. Kelci Marosites had four treys, finishing with 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals.Emily Kiser scored the first five points of the game, and finished with 12. Sarah Bradley added nine points and three assists while Schubert totaled six points and four rebounds.“Sarah Bradley and Melenda Perry did a nice job running the team,” said Dugger of his point guards. The combination of good performances throughout the team is making Elizabethton better.“It helps a lot,” said Kayla. “It doesn’t take one person. It takes a whole team. It’s a team game.”Happy Valley got 14 points from Mackenzie Blankenship and 12 points and eight rebounds from Kalee Johnson.
