ACA is law, let’s move on and help Tennessee

I read with dismay Lt. Gov. Ramsey’s claim in his Insight column on Jan. 19 that gone were the days of defending against “an onslaught of bad Democratic legislation.” Ironic, since just four days prior, four Tennessee state legislators continued the onslaught of Republican attacks to block the Affordable Care Act. That’s in addition to the onslaught in Congress, where more than 50 votes have failed to repeal the act.State Sen. Mae Beavers’ bill would bar state and local governments, among others, from assisting or administering health insurance obtained under the ACA. On one level, it’s yet one more waste of taxpayer money since the U.S. Supreme Court has already ruled that the act is constitutional. Under the supremacy clause of the U.S. Constitution, states must follow it. But worse, the bill would create confusion and lawsuits harming Tennessee citizens, wasting more resources and possibly keeping sick people from getting needed care they have paid for. Tennessee already uses the ACA website for Medicaid enrollment, since Tennessee doesn’t have a working website. And more than 26,000 Tennesseans have already bought and depend upon health care under the ACA.At a time when we should be using our resources wisely and helping our citizens secure health care, which is essential to our recovering economy, this onslaught of bad legislation must stop. More than 5 million U.S. citizens have already bought health care insurance or have been added to insurance as dependents related to this act. Let’s get over it and move on to real issues instead of wasting our time and resources.JENNIFER HELTON HANNJonesborough
