Wardrobe malfunction: Stoney Creek man shoots himself in chin while taking off pants

ELIZABETHTON — A man accidentally shot himself in the chin Sunday evening, according to the Carter County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputy David Caldwell reported he was dispatched the residence of William Rood on the Stoney Creek Highway at 6:40 p.m. When he arrived, he found Rood bleeding from his mouth and nose.

Caldwell said Rood told him he had a .25 caliber Baretta pistol in the right front pocket of his pants. He took the pants off and placed them on his dresser, at which time the Baretta discharged, striking Rood in the chin. It was believed the bullet was still in Rood’s neck.

Rood was transported to nearby Elizabethton Airport, where he was transported by helicopter to the Johnson City Medical Center.
