Alex Hardin was one of four victorious Johnson City Athletic Club boxers at the Spring Fling Saturday night at Carver Rec, and Hardin was named best Junior Olympic boxer.Hardin, a 12-year-old 119-pounder, defeated Shamor McClain via a 3-0 decision to improve to 9-2.“Alex fought a pretty tough kid from South Carolina,” JCAC coach Scott Vance said. “He is tall and real long-armed, and he just outpointed him. Alex did really well. He’s coming along pretty good.”Other JCAC winners were Malik Bowman, Jac Robbins and Gabe Nickles. Bowman, 12, defeated Nashville’s Ataullah Hassaan, 3-0, in the 100-pound division. Bowman (13-3) is a reigning state Silver Gloves champion and won the East Tennessee Golden Gloves this month at Ace Miller Arena in Knoxville.“Malik looked razor sharp,” Vance said. “He was very impressive. Hassaan was quality opponent with a very good coach (Donnie Broadway). But Malik was on, and he was better.“Ataullah was aggressive. Malik would counter back with a left hook and then come with the right hand. Malik was very crisp.”Nickles (12-3), a 12-year-old 70-pounder, defeated Crossville’s Ashton Burgess, 3-0.“I wanted Gabe to cut the ring off more and stay busier, but he did well,” Vance said. “I think Gabe could’ve done a little bit more, but he got the win.”Jac Robbins, 16, defeated Chattanooga’s Quenton Sims, 3-0.“Jac had lost to this kid last year in Golden Gloves in a pretty close fight,” Vance said. “Jac really looked good. He was throwing a lot of punches.”Chattanooga’s Sencere Hayes defeated the JCAC’s Nolan Peck. It was Hayes’ fourth victory in as many meetings with Peck, who has won 14 of 18 fights when Hayes was not the opponent.MMA fighter Ronnie Curtis (JCAC) made his boxing debut. He lost 3-0 to Trey Jainez (Lynchburg, Va.) in the 201-pound division.“Ronnie did well,” Vance said. “He got a little tired. He’ll learn with experience as time goes on.”Amber Osborne (1-1), of Team Ludus, lost to Katherine Graiffer (Knoxville)Vance was excited by the Spring Fling attendance, and is looking forward to the Cob Riddle-Deacon Bowers card on May 17 at the Elizabethton Parks and Rec.JCAC product Robert Hall (1-0) is scheduled to have his second professional bout in Nashville on April 26. Hall will take on Brett Smith (Lynchburg, Tenn.). Smith is a strong fighter that once knocked out the capable Vaughn Williams (Greenville, S.C.) in a bout at the Johnson City Holiday Inn.
