Johnson City Schools prepares to Rejoice in student talent

Rejoice in the Arts, Johnson City Schools’ annual showcase of its elementary, intermediate and middle school students’ talents, will be held Thursday night at The Mall at Johnson City.The evening will include more than three hours of preforming arts — singing, dancing and instrumental performances — in the mall’s J.C. Penney Court, and a visual arts exhibit of student paintings, sculptures, drawings and more on display in the nearby Forever 21 corridor.Dr. Debra Bentley, supervisor of instruction and communications for the school system, said the annual art show is a way for the schools to showcase both the talents of their students and the educational skills of their teachers.“Arts are a very integral part of development of the whole person, beyond math and science and reading,” Bentley said. “Rejoice in the Arts is a way to help students develop that.“This is our 11th year. The mall has been very hospitable having it. It’s all on the upper level, all close together and convenient to see. It’s well-attended.” And perhaps most importantly, Bentley said, “The students look forward to it. “Many students have a strong interest in performing arts. And many of the elementary students, the recorder players, will go on to be a part of the middle and high school band and orchestra programs,” she said.Bentley said the annual show is also a great way to showcase the visual and performing arts programs the schools provide. “Our arts educators do a tremendous job bringing out strengths in our students,” she said.The performing arts program will begin at 5 p.m. and continue through 8:15 with 15-minute performances by kindergarten through eighth-grade classes from each of the city’s eight elementary schools, Indian Trail Intermediate School and Liberty Bell Middle School.The visual arts exhibit will be on display throughout the evening. “It’s our K-8 evening of the arts, and we invite the community to come and see some great performances,” Bentley said.
