All county offices in Washington County will be closed today after officials conducted a reassessment of road conditions early this morning, Mayor Dan Eldridge said.“Only emergency and essential services are out today,” he said. “I was out early, about 7 a.m., and talked to (Highway Superintendent) Johnny Deakins.”Eldridge said he didn’t want county employees at risk.“It did not look like conditions were going to improve,” by the time county offices were supposed to open at 9:30 a.m., he said. On Tuesday, Eldridge closed county offices at 2 p.m. They were scheduled to reopen late this morning.“We didn’t want employees taking a chance,” he said of the decision to close.Officials said main roads were mostly clear, but side roads continued to be slick and dangerous.Circuit Court Clerk Karen Guinn said anyone who had cases scheduled Wednesday should call the clerk’s office Thursday to see when the case will be handled. “If they’ll contact us tomorrow, all the cases will be reset,” Guinn said.Thursday’s court schedule remains the same unless there are further cancellations, she added.According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, snowfall totals varied throughout the area from about 2.5 inches in Johnson City to 5 inches in parts of Sullivan and Hawkins counties.Temperatures around the area were in the single digits Wednesday morning and expected to reach the upper teens throughout the day. The wind, however, will keep it feeling more like 5 degrees.Tonight, temperatures will be in the single digits again, but warmer throughout the day Thursday with a high in the mid to upper 30s. East Tennessee fared better than further south where the storm system crippled Atlanta.
