Johnson City police are looking for a woman accused of walking out of a local jewelry store with $90,000 worth of rings she had asked to see, then swiped before running out.
It happened around 11 a.m. after the woman — described as a white female with long dark brown hair and approximately 5’4” tall — went into Dempsey’s Jewelers, 3018 Peoples Street.
According to police, the woman was dressed in some type of gray warm-up suit and a red hoodie with gray sleeves.
The woman asked to see a ring in one of the glass display cases. An employee assisted the woman and began showing her rings she wanted to try on.
According to Police Lt. Steve Sherfey, the woman was seated at one of the display counters and then grabbed several rings she had been looking at and left the store.
Chris Jordan, Dempsey’s manager, said the woman took three rings “of significant value.” The store is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects. Jordan also said he’s pushing information out on the store’s Facebook page, Dempsey’s Jewelers.
A police report on the incident indicated the woman took three rings — one valued at $45,00, another valued at $25,000 and one valued at $23,800 — she had been looking at.
Police said Dempsey’s employees reported that the woman got into a small white newer model vehicle, possibly a Toyota Camry, and left the parking lot.
Police pulled two photographs from Dempsey’s surveillance cameras, two that show the woman and one showing the vehicle. Police said a man was driving the vehicle, but had no concrete description of him.
“While she was inside he got out and put snow on his license plate,” Jordan said, something Jordan discovered after pulling video surveillance from a security camera.
Police said the investigation is continuing.
