In addition to the downtown flooding problems created primarily by Mother Nature, downtown businesses have other problems created by some Johnson City residents, whom I will term the “do-gooders.”A few downtown groups are continually feeding, clothing and pacifying bums, druggies and drunks in the downtown area several times a day, each day a week. These “do-gooders” think they are helping society while they are only hurting. These panhandlers congregate in the downtown areas bumming business owners’ customers, buying drugs, prostituting, falling down drunk and stealing.This contributes to drug dealing, robberies and shootings. I personally know of an arts group from Kingsport that will not return to Johnson City for a showing due to the bums entering the gallery and grabbing the appetizers.How come these “do-gooders” don’t invite all these street people to their personal homes for the weekends and holidays instead of inviting them into our business centers?
