Treatment of animals

I am responding to Kathryn M. Berry’s letter to the editor dated March 17 regarding the 20 dogs who were crammed into drop-off boxes after hours at the Washington County Animal Shelter. Debbie Dobbs called it an act of cowardice and I agree. The owner(s) should have turned to the shelter and their caring staff for assistance with the dogs, who were in need of medical attention and loving homes.Berry also states “when we as a society begin to place more priority on our pets than we do our friends and neighbors, we have our priorities slightly out of order.” I believe Berry should be reminded of a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”LISA HANSELMAN ARNOLDJohnson City
