Dennis Prager can’t handle historic fact

Can the editors of the Johnson City Press honestly not find a better spokesperson for the right than Dennis Prager? His obsessive demonizations of the left every Saturday are as predictable as the vocalizations of a Chatty Cathy doll. His Jan. 18 column, in which he castigates liberals for deaths in Iraq, Afghanistan and Southeast Asia, is a prime example of his deceptive blame games. If we trouble ourselves with the facts of the history of U.S. involvement in Iraq, for example, the Reagan administration militarily and financially supported Saddam Hussein before George H.W. Bush decided he was a villain. It was then Bush, in the aftermath of Desert Storm, abandoned our Iraqi allies to death and torture when they rose up against Hussein. The situation in Southeast Asia unsurprisingly also was much more nuanced that Prager would have us to believe. The reality is that both Democrats and Republicans have conducted themselves shamefully many times in their foreign policy choices during the past 50 years, short-sightedly propping up countless unpopular thugs and kleptocrats across the globe, resulting in thousands of American deaths and millions of dead in other nations. However, in allowing Iraq and Afghanistan to sink or swim on their governments’ and militaries’ own merits — without putting American troops in further harm’s way or placing us in the role of indefinite occupiers of foreign nations — I believe Obama should be commended. It is the right of the right to disagree with such an assessment. Even so, debate should be carried on in a manner that doesn’t dehumanize or stereotype those with whom we disagree, while handling historical facts with integrity. Prager has repeatedly shown himself incapable of such honorable conduct. It is beneath the dignity of the Johnson City Press to continue to carry his columns.ANDREW L. SPITZNASJohnson City
