Pizza N Gyro repeated as Pie Wars champions Sunday night, the first back-to-back champ in four years of the event’s existence.
Pie Wars pits participating restaurants that serve pizza against each other in a friendly competition where event attendees eat hearty and vote for their favorite pie. Proceeds go to a local charity picked by Young Professionals of the Tri-Cities, the group that puts on the event, held at The Charles in downtown Johnson City.
Last year, Pizza N Gyro, 3043 Boones Creek Road, No. 105, was still in its infancy as a restaurant, and winning the Cup provided a big boost for the new business.
Owner Maurice Jabbour said it just about doubled their business immediately, and winning it this year feels really special.
In just the few hours since their win was announced, Jabbour said he’s received countless messages, handshakes and well wishes. All those things, and, he said, an influx of walk-ins, calls and new faces coming into the restaurant Monday.
Jabbour said he was proud that the hard work put in by him and his employees has paid off.Related articlePie Wars 4 competition heats up downtown Johnson City
Fox’s Pizza Den was second and Mellow Mushroom third. To remove any bias from voting, the six competing restaurants had their pizzas brought from the back to sampling tables for the voters that matched with just a corresponding number.
Young Professionals co-founder Samara Litvack said was excited with the results of her group’s signature event. The group picked the General Shale Brick Natural History Museum and Gray Fossil Site as the nonprofit organization to receive proceeds from the event.
“We raised a grand total of $6,189.93 for the Fossil Site,” Litvack said. “We are so thankful for everyone who came out and showed their support for our organization and for the Natural History Museum.”
