The Buzz: Local news that will get you talking today



You can’t go without the Buzz. Here’s a quick catch-up on pertinent recent stories:• Local preteen’s impact felt through past actions and words. In some ironic way, a 12-year-old’s dream to travel the world doing mission work has materialized with her death, and though Tim and Ellen miss their youngest child terribly, they can see the impact she’s made around the globe.



• Why no hemp in Tennessee? Group wants state to legalize farming, manufacturing. The Hemp Industries Association announced last week the establishment of the Tennessee Hemp Industries Association, the national organization’s first state chapter.

• Pizza N Gyro repeats as champs of Pie Wars; Fox’s finishes second. Pizza N Gyro repeated as Pie Wars champions Sunday night, the first back-to-back champ in four years of the event’s existence.

• Group hopes to name part of city street after MLK. Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be observed in Johnson City on Monday without a street named after the legendary civil rights leader, as is the case in most sizeable communities.

• Smokey Mountain Medical Marijuana Rights Rally to be held. A Bluff City man has organized the Smokey Mountain Medical Marijuana Rights Rally in support of pending legislation in Nashville that would legalize prescribing cannabis to qualifying patients.  

• Questions asked about candidates’ intentions in attending campaign events. Attending the political campaign kickoff for a candidate could be perceived as showing support for that person, but on the other hand, it might not mean that at all.

• Faith, honor, and compassion emphasized at MLK birthday dinner. Dr. Joanne Walker Flowers almost brought the walls of the Carver Recreational Center down as the keynote speaker of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration on Monday night.

• Sharpshooter has Hampton going strong. There are three reasons why Hampton is more dangerous than a lot of boys’ basketball teams in the state.

• Here we go again: more single-digit temperatures on the way. Somewhat caught by surprise by the severity of what was called the “Polar Vortex” that blew through the region about two weeks ago, the area finds itself better prepared to tackle another incoming blast of cold weather. Temperatures will drop today through the beginning of the weekend.
