Washington County commissioners voted down a motion Monday that would have redirected tax dollars now going to subsidize their own health care benefits. Commissioner Ethan Flynn told his colleagues the estimated $150,000 to be spent this year to cover health insurance for commissioners could be better used to pay for long- overdue renovations to the second floor of the Washington County Courthouse.Commissioners Doyle Cloyd, Sam Humphreys, Joe Sheffield, Sam Phillips, Richard Matherly, Mark Ferguson, Gerald Sparks, Roger Nave, Mike Ford, Steven Light, Ben Bowman, Alpha Bridger, Phyllis Corso and David Shanks disagreed.More than half of the 25 members of the County Commission receive taxpayer-funded health or dental insurance at a cost of more than $407,376 since September 2011.You can Sound Off on this topic by telling us what you think of Washington County commissioners receiving generous health care benefits subsidized by county taxpayers.
