In addition to Earth Day, week of eco-friendly activities planned

Tuesday is Earth Day, and across the nation, communities are engaging in projects and activities geared toward environmental cleaning and conservation. Here are a few environmentally themed activities in Washington County this week:Tuesday — Earth Day• Earth Day Hike & Project: Davy Crockett’s Birthplace State Park, 1245 Davy Crockett Park Road, Limestone, 8 a.m. Participants will meet at the park and walk through some of its meadows, which serve as the home for several bird and small-game species. The service project will be aimed at the preservation of that animal life.• Earth Day Festival: ETSU campus, in front of Sherrod Library, or in the event of rain, at the Cave in the Culp Center, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.The festival will host several of the school’s environmental conservation and sustainability groups to discuss local environmental issues and their experiences dealing with them. The festival will also present awards for three separate school-sponsored contests.Wednesday• Park Overall lecture, ETSU Culp Center Forum Room, 6-7 p.m.Actress and Greeneville native Overall, who also works as an environmental activist, will host a talk titled “Regional Industries and Their Environmental Impact,” which will discuss her work with local companies in insuring their adherence to environmental laws and standards.Friday• Ecofeminism panel, meeting room 6 of the Culp Center, ETSU, 2-3:30 p.m.This panel will discuss what ecofeminism is, the issues surrounding it and how to become involved in it on a local level. Saturday• Keep Jonesborough Beautiful events, several locations in Jonesborough, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.This will mark the first year that the town of Jonesborough has participated in the Keep America Beautiful initiative. From 8 a.m.-noon, people will be able to safely dispose of their electronic waste, or e-waste, at a collection center in the Jonesborough Visitors Center parking lot at 117 Boone St. Two cleanup projects will also occur in town between 8 a.m.-noon, and area streams will be cleaned from noon-2 p.m.• Go Green at the Green Mile, The Wellness Center, 200 Med Tech Parkway, 9 a.m.-noon.A one-mile walk/run will begin at the Wellness Center at 9 a.m., but the center will also boast several environmentally conscious booths and services, such as shoe disposal. Participants will have a chance to win several door prizes, including two bicycles supplied by Mountain States Health Alliance and an electric grill offered by the Johnson City Power Board.
