Vols signee Philip Cofer plans to request release from LOI, but has not completely ruled out UT

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee men’s basketball signee Philip Cofer plans to request a release from his Letter of Intent but has not completely ruled out the Vols, according to his father.Michael Cofer told the News Sentinel by phone Thursday that his family plans filing the online form required to request that Phillip Cofer, a three-star, 6-8 forward from Whitewater High School (Fayetteville, Ga.), be released from the NLI he signed in November.Since, former UT coach Cuonzo Martin departed for the vacant job at California. He left last Tuesday. One week later his replacement, former Southern Miss coach Donnie Tyndall, was announced as UT’s new coach.”A big surprise for me, my wife, and all the issues that are going about in regards to the new coach,” Michael Cofer said. “Of course, I assume the new coach will do an outstanding job. That’s what he’s hired to do. Right now, I’m just trying to get my relationship back with my son. I really couldn’t give you any concrete statements on what we will decide to do.”Our partners at the Knoxville News-Sentinel have more on the story.
