Gov. Bill Haslam has declared this week to be School Board Appreciation Week in Tennessee. This commemoration provides a chance for the community to offer thanks to those individuals for their commitment to public education. As elected public servants school board members come from all walks of life and offer their time and energy to ensure Tennessee’s school systems operate efficiently and students receive the best education possible. Working together to address the complex and demanding challenges facing school districts, they advocate for educational quality and accountability.Outside of attending school board meetings, they contribute hundreds of hours each year engaging in policy development and refinement; addressing concerns of educators and the community; and recognizing outstanding accomplishments of students and professionals. They also attend seminars and training sessions to keep abreast of the latest trends in educational leadership. In addition, school board members are deeply involved in community activities and spend many hours in the schools and at extracurricular events. In this time of economic uncertainty, when schools in Tennessee are experiencing difficulties caused by declining state and local revenues, our school board has demonstrated effective stewardship and responsible management of our resources. Citizens can be assured that they are getting maximum value of educational tax dollars spent. The Washington County School Board has a proud heritage of service and a distinguished record of making extraordinary efforts to do the very best for the children, parents and citizens of this district. I ask that you join all educators throughout the state to salute the men and women who provide grassroots governance of public schools. Please make a special effort to tell each school board member that his or her hard work has been noticed and is truly appreciated.RONALD A. DYKESDirector of SchoolsWashington County
