Gough uses no facts

The Feb. 9 Insight section featured a prominent and odd column by frequent contributor Ken Gough. Its rather cryptic heading could easily be construed to depict that what Gough was advocating was a farce. The gist of the column, a parody, detailed in a distopic manner how the food service business and society would be impacted if the food stamp program were to be replaced by Obamacare-type regulations. Mercifully and appropriately he concluded the piece with the words “never mind.” Nonetheless, his position and his byline, “What I know,” are both disingenuous since he ignores the fact that 100 million Americans, undoubtedly including many of his friends or relatives, have enrolled themselves in effective government programs, such as Medicare or veterans benefits, without the dire effects he envisions. The same edition also contained a Forum letter by Jim Benelisha, which included data, figures and a detailed account of how the Affordable Care Act has positively affected his coverage. He concluded by advising everyone to check at www.healthcare.gov for their coverage options. The Press’ own motto, “What the people don’t know will hurt them,” suggests that if a writer reverts to snarky conjecture they should at least include an iota of facts.DENNIS O’HAREGray
