A city man was arrested after police said he lied about details surrounding an auto accident. On Thursday, Johnson City police officers arrested David M. Atchley, 58, 619 Hillcrest Drive, on charges that the information he provided them about crashing his car was untrue.Atchley had filled out a crash report Tuesday, but officers said he misled them as to when, where and how the crash took place. Later that day, the city police were contacted by the campus police of East Tennessee State University, who were investigating a crash that was alleged to have happened Feb. 23. After comparing information of the two incidents, Johnson City and ETSU police began to suspect that Atchley had lied on his crash report.Police said Atchley met with investigators Thursday, and he admitted to crashing his car on the ETSU campus and then leaving the scene.Atchley was charged with filing a false police report and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage. He was taken to the Washington County Detention Center, where he was later released on $6,000 bond. Atchley will appear in Sessions Court on March 27 to face his charges.
