Super heroes and other characters from popular comic books, films, video games and more may be spotted on the East Tennessee State University campus this weekend when the university hosts its second annual comic and anime convention.Students may dress up as their favorite characters to attend ETSUCon on Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2, at the D.P. Culp University Center. Registration begins at 10 a.m. each day, and activities continue until 10 p.m. each night.The convention features vendors and artists from around the region, as well as celebrity voice actors, including Charles Martinet of Nintendo’s “Mario”; Martha Harms, Maya in “Borderlands 2”; Christopher Sabat from “Dragonball Z”; and Robert Axelrod, Lord Zedd in “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.”ETSUCon is sponsored by the Buccaneer Anime Club, Japanese Cultural Society, Student Government Association and Buctainment. Convention tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the door or online in advance at www.etsucon.com.The convention itself is part of a larger ETSUCon Weekend, one of the university’s theme weekends for students. The weekend includes the opening of “Four Color Culture: Comic Books and American History, 1938-2014,” an exhibit curated by Ensley Guffey, an ETSU graduate student in history, at the Reece Museum; Guffey will present a free public talk, “50 Years of War: Sgt. Rock and American Memories of World War II,” on Saturday, March 1, at noon at the museum. The Reece Museum will be open from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.Another event planned for ETSUCon Weekend is a kung fu performance by Master Shi Yan Nan. This free demonstration of Chinese Shaolin kung fu will take place Sunday, March 2, at 7 p.m. in the Culp Center’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium.
