Police say woman who hit cyclist with car was intoxicated

An Erwin woman was arrested after police said she drove her car into a cyclist while she was driving under the influence of an intoxicant.On Saturday, Johnson City Police Department officers arrested Christine E. Bassett, 40, 505 Grady Simmons Road, Erwin, after they heard reports of an accident on University Parkway, almost a mile west of the Greenlee Road overpass. Police said Bassett was driving west on University Parkway when her car – a Ford Taurus – left the road and struck John D. Moody, 30, 201 Walter Plant Road, Elizabethton, while he was riding his bicycle in the emergency lane. Moody, who, police said, sustained “serious injuries,” was taken to Johnson City Medical Center by Washington County/Johnson City EMS. Calls made to hospital personnel to learn the extent of Moody’s injuries were not returned.Police said Bassett appeared to be intoxicated, but did not specify as to what substance may have caused the alleged intoxication. Bassett was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (first offense) and aggravated assault. She was taken to the Washington County Detention Center, and was scheduled to appear in Sessions Court to face her charges on Monday afternoon.
