Fall kills man at Boone Lake

Following a call for a missing person, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Washington County-Johnson City Emergency Medical Services personnel removed a body from near Boone Lake Saturday evening.

Emergency 911 dispatchers received a call about 4:30 p.m., said WCSO Lt. Doug Gregg, and with the help of neighbors in the Jay’s Drive area, they were able to find the body of the missing man. A neighbor who was in a kayak spotted the body, and alerted law enforcement.

“It looks like an accidental fall,” Gregg said, saying the some of the items belonging to the man, who was found just about five feet from the water, including his hat and a flashlight, were spread out on embankment above the body. Because of a large drop of about 90-feet from the Jay’s Drive area, officers had to access the site of the body from across the water at a residence at the end of Baywood Drive.

Gregg said ice made it difficult to use emergency service boats to get near the body.

The identity of the man will not be released until his family is notified, Gregg said. He said the man was over the age of 60, and appears to be from out of state.
