Col. Gary McAllister (U.S. Army retired) is one candidate for commissioner you would do well to elect. As a retired Army colonel myself and retired Kansas state senator, I worked directly with Gary at senior levels in the Army. As a senator, I saw first-hand how state government can get into county business. I represented 10 rural counties in Kansas and needed county officials who stood together and stood up. How would Gary do? Well, he helped us build and stand up a nationwide Army medical command of 27,000 soldiers. Gary was the senior reserve advisor to the United States Army Surgeon General during one of the most difficult periods of Army transformation. He has been there.I served above Gary and with him. I always depended on Gary to ask the hard questions and make sure that we proceeded with full knowledge of a topic before making senior-level decisions. He doesn’t blow hot air and he is level-headed. He is a team builder — not a self-promoter. When we had difficulty with relationships in our senior ranks, I could always count on Gary to stay above the personality distractions and get to the facts. It is hard to make credible decisions when personality conflicts and issues of self-interest get in the way of sound analysis and common sense. Gary’s ability to focus on the hard questions often kept a few hot-headed colonels from dislodging us from the necessary business at hand and staying on track. I am pleased that Gary has decided to continue to serve his community as he served his country. Rather than sit back and watch, he has, once again, stepped up to a leadership role — ready to engage. I recommend you vote him in while you can. ALLEN C. SCHMIDTHays, Kan.
